Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Kinigi (Volcanoes NP)

“Murakaza neza mu Rwanda!” Is a native Rwandan phrase meaning ‘Welcome to Rwanda!’. Our Cul Tours and Safaris driver-guide will welcome you at the Kigali International Airport. Depending on your arrival time, our guide may propose to you a visit of Kigali city which includes the Genocide Memorial center at Gisozi. Thereafter, transfer in 2 hours to Kinigi at the foothills of the Volcanoes. The Hotel accommodation depends on your choice. (Lunch and Dinner)

Kinigi is the administrative center for Volcanoes National Park. It is at this place that visitors gather in the morning ahead of the Gorilla treks.

Flights: There are daily flights to Kigali from Nairobi with Kenya Airways and Rwandair Express. There are also 4 flights a week from Kigali to Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) and back to Kigali with Rwandair Express.  The daily charters can be organized with Coastal Aviation from/to most Tanzanian National Parks. This makes it easy to combine your short gorilla safari with another East-African safari!

Day 2: Gorilla Tracking – Transfer to Gisenyi (Lake Kivu)

After breakfast, we shall depart to Kinigi, the headquarters of the Park where your driver-guide will accomplish the necessary formalities for you. We shall meet your ranger guide(s) for a briefing about the greatest ape experience ever!  Cul Tours and Safaris will drive you to the slopes of one of the Virunga volcanoes, a starting point for your trek.

After the trek, expect a visit of the Iby’Iwacu traditional village, a community based tourism project where the local community displays the traditional Rwandan ways of living.

In the afternoon,  travel to Gisenyi on the shores of Lake Kivu. The trip will take only 1hr 20Minutes Enjoy the wonderful Lake Kivu! (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner).

Day 3: Gisenyi (Lake Kivu) – transfer to Kigali

Travel 187Km from Gisenyi to Kigali on a tarmac road within 3 hours. There is much to experience here!

A stay on the private beach of your hotel as nature’s serene lake cuddles you. You have an opportunity to visit some splendid sites along the way such as; Nyundo with multiple craft-shops, Imbabazi Orphanage at Mugongo.

Overnight at your hotel in Kigali. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner).

Nyundo is one of the earliest Catholic centers in Rwanda founded at the start of the 20th century and has the only secondary school of arts.

Imbabazi Orphanage founded by Mrs. Rosamond Halsey Carr in 1994 at Mugongo cares for the genocide orphans. Rosamond Halsey was a young American fashion illustrator when she married an adventurous hunter-explorer, Kenneth Carr. Together they journeyed to then “Congo Belge”, present day DRC. Upon their divorce in 1949, Kenneth left and Rosamond stayed in Congo until 1955. She later moved to northwest Rwanda where she stayed for the next 50 years. She witnessed all Rwanda’s historical events since then and among which was the 1994 genocide. She is the author of Land of a Thousand Hills: my life in Rwanda.


Day 4: Kigali Visit and Departure

Hotel pick up will be arranged depending on you departure time. It is important you enjoy your breakfast. If you missed the opportunity for the Kigali city tour on day 1, then you must enjoy it! The trip includes the visit to the Genocide Memorial center at Gisozi. Thereafter, you will be transferred to the Airport for your departure.

Genocide Memorials:

While in Rwanda, you will find Memorials all over the land of a thousand hills to remember the genocide victims of 1994. The most important Genocide Memorials are those of Kigali (Gisozi) and Murambi (Gikongoro) where the history of the genocide is explained. A visit to the genocide memorial is an emotional experience for most of our visitors.
